Traction Alopecia - Hair Loss on the Edges

Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss that occurs when hair follicles are damaged by repeated tension or pulling on the hair. It is most commonly seen in people who frequently wear tight hairstyles, such as braids, weaves, or ponytails, but it can also be caused by other sources of tension on the hair, such as the use of hair extensions, hats, or helmets.

The symptoms of traction alopecia can vary depending on the severity of the condition, but they often include thinning or bald spots on the scalp, itchiness or soreness, and sometimes even scarring.

Treatment for traction alopecia typically involves stopping the behavior that caused the hair loss, such as avoiding tight hairstyles or removing hair extensions.

In some cases, the hair may regrow on its own once the tension is removed, but in other cases, more aggressive treatments may be necessary, such as topical or oral medications to promote hair growth, or hair transplant surgery.

It is important to seek professional medical advice if you are experiencing symptoms of traction alopecia, as early intervention can often prevent further hair loss and increase the chances of successful treatment.
